If you run tours, activities, or any kind of booking business, you’ve probably seen software that promises to “import all your reviews automatically” from Google, TripAdvisor, Airbnb, Trustpilot, Viator, and Yelp — all in one click, always up to date, zero effort.
It sounds great. Most of it isn’t true, and it’s worth knowing why before you pick software based on that promise.
Why “automatic” doesn’t mean the same thing for every platform
Every review site works differently behind the scenes, and only some of them actually let outside software pull reviews automatically:
- Google does offer a way for other software to fetch reviews automatically. This is real and it works — but even here, you’re limited to a handful of reviews per business, and you need to set up your own Google account and (complicated API) connection to use it.
- Trustpilot also allows automatic fetching, but only if the business already has a paid Trustpilot account. Without that, there’s nothing to connect to.
- TripAdvisor does not let small businesses connect freely. Access is only given to approved partners after an application process, and even then, only a small number of reviews per listing are shared.
- Airbnb doesn’t offer any way for outside software to pull reviews at all. There’s no public connection available to small businesses, full stop.
- Yelp allows some access, but only if you display the reviews in Yelp’s own format — you can’t blend them into your own page design the way many tools show in their marketing screenshots.
So in practice, only Google and (with a paid account) Trustpilot can genuinely be described as “automatic” for a typical small business. Everything else needs to be added by hand, copied in from another tool, or comes from a data source the software company isn’t being upfront about.
A real-world example
Some travel booking platforms like Gondola, advertise review importing from six or more platforms as if they all work the same effortless way — pick your platforms, connect, done. Based on how these review platforms actually work, that’s simply not possible for most of the listed sources. If a product claims to automatically pull in Airbnb or TripAdvisor reviews with no application process, no paid account, and no manual step, it’s worth asking exactly how they’re doing it — because officially, there’s no way to.
Our approach
We’d rather tell you the truth than sell you a promise we can’t keep. Some review sources really can connect automatically. Others simply can’t, no matter which software you use — and any tool that tells you otherwise is either overstating things or doing something behind the scenes you should ask questions about.
Tour Engine includes a built-in review system so you’re not dependent on any outside platform. Customers can leave a review that’s tied to a verified booking or purchase, so every review on your site comes from a real, confirmed customer. Before anything goes live, the review passes through an approval step in your admin dashboard, giving you full control over what gets published. On top of that, the same dashboard lets you manually add reviews you’ve collected from other platforms — Google, TripAdvisor, Trustpilot, Airbnb, and more — so all your reviews, wherever they originally came from, live together in one consistent system on your site.
