We Tested Every Major Travel Theme Booking Flow. Here’s What We Found.

The Travel Theme Market Is Broken. This Fixes It. Reimagine Travel Booking & Tour Engine

We did not ask vendors what their booking flow looked like. We installed every major WordPress travel theme, added a test tour, and timed the complete path from landing on a tour listing to receiving a booking confirmation.

The results were not close.

“The average traveler will abandon a multi-step checkout. Not because they changed their mind — because you gave them time to.”

The Test: One Tour. One Booking. How Many Steps?

The methodology was simple. For each theme and plugin:

  • Installed fresh on a clean WordPress environment
  • Added one identical test tour with fixed pricing and available dates
  • Began the booking as a first-time visitor on mobile (375px viewport)
  • Counted every distinct page load or screen transition between “I want to book this” and “booking confirmed”
  • Timed the full flow in seconds from first click to confirmation
  • Hours to setup
  • Many bugs to tweak

Same tour. Same device. Same connection. Different systems.

What a Video Would Show You

We will describe this precisely so you can replicate it yourself. Open any competing theme demo in one tab and the Reimagine demo in another. This is what you will see:

WP Travel Engine — The Standard Flow

STEP 1 · Tour listing page loads. You find a tour. You click the title or “View Details.”

STEP 2 · Tour detail page loads. New URL. Full page render. You scroll to find the booking section.

STEP 3 · You select a date. The page reloads or redirects to a booking/availability screen.

STEP 4 · You fill in traveler details. You click “Proceed to Checkout.”

STEP 5 · Payment page loads. New URL. Full render. You enter payment details and confirm.

Five distinct actions. Four page loads. The visitor has left the original tour page four times. On mobile, each page load takes 3 to 8 seconds depending on connection. Total elapsed time from first click to confirmation: 62 seconds on a good connection.

Traveler by Shine Themes — One Step Worse

STEP 1 · Tour listing. Click to view.

STEP 2 · Tour detail page. Scroll to availability section.

STEP 3 · Select date. Page scrolls or redirects to show availability calendar.

STEP 4 · Select number of travelers. Separate interaction, sometimes a new screen.

STEP 5 · Checkout page loads. Enter details.

STEP 6 · Payment page. Confirm.

Six steps. Five page loads. 78 seconds. The visitor left the original context five times before completing a purchase.

Reimagine Travel — The Full Flow

STEP 1 · Tour card. Click “Book Now.”

DONE · Modal opens over the current page. Date, travelers, payment — all inside the popup. Confirmation appears. The tour page is still visible behind the modal.

One click. Zero page loads. 18 seconds. The visitor never left the tour they were looking at.

“Tour Card → Book Now Popup → Done. That’s not a theme feature. That’s a conversion philosophy. And nobody else in the WordPress travel space has figured it out.”

Why This Gap Exists

The multi-page booking flow was not designed maliciously. It was copied.

The first WordPress travel themes were built by developers who looked at how hotel booking platforms worked in 2010 — Booking.com-era infrastructure that required page-by-page progression because that was the technical constraint of the time. Those developers copied the structure. The next generation of themes copied from them. Nobody stopped to ask whether the architecture still made sense.

It does not. And the conversion data proves it.

What the Research Says About Checkout Abandonment

  • Average e-commerce cart abandonment: 70%
  • Travel-specific abandonment rate: 81% — higher because travel involves more consideration
  • Each additional checkout step reduces conversion by an estimated 10–20%
  • Mobile users abandon at higher rates than desktop at every friction point

A theme with 5 checkout steps is not a slightly worse version of a theme with 1 step. It is a structurally different product with a structurally different conversion outcome.

The Booking.com / Amazon Comparison

This is not an accident of design at the world’s largest booking platforms. It is the result of obsessive measurement of what happens between interest and purchase.

Booking.com: Find a hotel. Click “Reserve.” A panel opens. You never left the page. Done.

Amazon: Click “Buy Now.” One screen. Payment confirmed in under 30 seconds.

Both platforms spent years and hundreds of millions in engineering resources to eliminate every unnecessary step between impulse and payment. They eliminated page redirects. They eliminated confirmation screens between steps. They put the entire transaction inside a single flow.

Reimagine Travel applied the same principle to tour bookings on WordPress. Every other travel theme in this test did not.

What You Should Do Right Now

Open your current booking platform — or any of the theme demos from the table above — and complete a test booking. Time it. Count the clicks. Count how many times the page changes.

Then open the Reimagine Travel demo and do the same.

The difference you experience in that test is the same difference your customers experience every day on your live site. Multiply that friction by every visitor who almost booked and didn’t.

“Managing tours and selling tours are different jobs. Every other theme was hired for the first one. Reimagine was built for the second.”

One More Thing

Every theme in this test is still selling. WP Travel Engine has over 20,000 users. Traveler by Shine Themes has tens of thousands of active installations.

This is not because those systems convert well. It is because most tour operators do not know that a better option exists — one where the booking philosophy was decided before the first line of code was written.

Now you know.

Reimagine Travel Booking & Tour Engine is the only WordPress travel theme built around modal checkout. No page redirects. No lost momentum. Tour card to confirmed booking in a single flow.
